Homecoming is the inaugural exhibition of Gallery SSS, bringing together artists whose stories began in Michigan or the greater Midwest before leading them elsewhere. The exhibition considers how the region’s landscapes, seasons, materials, and cultural rhythms continue to shape creative practices far beyond their origins.

Spanning clay, wood, glass, fiber, leather, aluminum, pigment, and reclaimed materials, the works explore memory, transformation, and place while blurring boundaries between art, craft, and design. Furniture becomes sculpture, fiber turns architectural, and functional materials take on expressive form.

Grand Rapids has long been a center for design, furniture making, and craftsmanship. Homecoming builds on that legacy by reconnecting the region with artists whose work has traveled beyond its borders.

About

Gallery SSS

Gallery SSS was founded by Sarah Sherman Samuel following her return to Michigan after more than fifteen years in Los Angeles. Shaped by the experience of discovering artists through galleries, studios, and creative communities, the gallery brings that same spirit of discovery and connection to Grand Rapids. Opening alongside the Sarah Sherman Samuel studio, Gallery SSS extends Samuel’s multidisciplinary practice and longstanding approach to curating fine art, design, and craft. Its program focuses on artists and makers working at the intersection of art, design, material exploration, and craftsmanship. Rooted in Michigan with an international perspective, the gallery presents local, national, and international artists, creating a dialogue between place, practice, and community. Gallery SSS is located in a restored late nineteenth-century building on historic Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids’ Uptown district. Thoughtfully adapted by Sarah Sherman Samuel, the neighborhood landmark begins a new chapter as a space for contemporary art, design, and craft.
