This show will focus on new Factory artists including Jerry Ross Barrish a 4th generation San Franciscan who studied sculpture and film at San Francisco Art Institute from 1970-1976 on the GI Bill. After receiving his BFA & MFA, Barrish completed three feature-length narrative films. Returning to sculpture in 1988, he began creating figurative assemblage of plastic found materials. Barrish is the subject of William Farley’s documentary feature film “Plastic Man, the artful life of Jerry Ross Barrish” available on Amazon Prime, Google Play, iTunes and YouTube.

In an era defined by the urgency of environmental crises, Jerry Ross Barrish emerges as a beacon of artistic innovation within the contemporary sculpture landscape. While not explicitly themed around environmentalism, Barrish's masterful manipulation of plastic materials offers a unique lens through which to contemplate the pressing issue of plastic pollution. As BBC Earth aptly states, "The plastic crisis is one of the greatest challenges facing planet earth," and through Barrish's work, we are compelled to confront this reality with renewed introspection.

"My natural bent as a storyteller becomes obvious with the figurative nature of subjects. There's a sense of magic when a piece is completed—sometimes I don't understand how it happened. But, not unlike the editing process from my filmmaking days, it's just a question of the order of things. Capturing gesture, form, and movement to bring life to this refuse is the essence of my art."

– Jerry Ross Barrish, San Francisco, 2024
