On May 18, 2023, on the occasion of New York design week, Sight Unseen will launch an exhibition featuring the newest additions to the Sight Unseen Collection, which comprises furniture, lighting, and objects from a stable of emerging and mid-career designers from around the world, all of which can be ordered directly through Sight Unseen. The exhibition — taking place at Voltz Clarke gallery on the Lower East Side — will feature new work by 23 designers and studios, displayed alongside the work of France-based painter Heather Chontos. In 2018, Sight Unseen expanded into sales, offering furniture and objects by independent designers at the forefront of contemporary design, direct to the trade. This New York design week exhibition represents the first time that Sight Unseen has formally presented its own Collection to the public. The editors and curators of Sight Unseen, Jill Singer and Monica Khemsurov, hoped to show the Collection in a more interesting context than a simple white box space, so they’ve partnered with New York art gallery Voltz Clarke to exhibit the works inside the gallery’s spring show of colorful abstract paintings by Chontos. They’ve also partnered with the flooring company ShawContract to reimagine the gallery’s concrete floors with a single plane of monochromatic carpeting in a pale green that will complement the designs on view.
Highlights of the show will include the launch of the first furniture collection by Brooklyn ceramicist Danny Kaplan, the New York debut of LA designer Ben Willett, selections from the debut collection of New York duo Alexis & Ginger, and the launch of three new pieces by New York’s Mock Studio.
