ERAN U.S. Debut Exhibition at Colony

ERAN is a Mexico City- based design studio founded by Fernanda Díaz. The name ERAN comes from the Spanish past tense of the verb “to be,” a reference to the studio’s relationship with what has been and what is yet to come. The studio creates furniture and objects that explore the space between function, sculpture, and collecting. Drawing inspiration from vintage and antique pieces, ERAN reinterprets forms from the past through contemporary design, creating objects intended to endure beyond trends and become part of a home’s story. The studio’s appreciation for antiques extends beyond inspiration. ERAN also collects, restores, and curates antique furniture as part of its practice, creating a dialogue between objects from the past and pieces made today. This relationship with antiques informs the studio’s approach to design and reflects a belief in the value of objects that carry history, character, and evidence of the hands that made them. After years of restoring, collecting, and living alongside antiques, ERAN began designing its own collection in 2022. This evolution grew naturally from a desire to create new objects that could hold the same sense of character and permanence found in the pieces the studio had spent years caring for. Today, ERAN’s original furniture and its work with antiques exist alongside one another as part of the same practice. Each new piece is produced in Mexico City in close collaboration with local craftspeople. ERAN’s practice is rooted in an exchange of knowledge, valuing the techniques and generations of experience brought by its collaborators. Over time, these long standing relationships have developed into a deep sense of trust and collaboration. ERAN is interested in making objects that feel as though they could have existed before, while still belonging completely to the present. The studio believes that good furniture should not simply follow a trend, but should have the possibility of becoming part of a home’s history, accumulating stories through use and being passed down for generations.
