Brian DeMuro and Puru Das, founders of international design firm DeMuro Das, are pleased to present the culmination of a graduate-level design competition, in collaboration with the Department of Furniture Design at the Rhode Island School of Design. The exhibition opens on Friday, November 12 at DeMuro Das’ Flatiron showroom. The brief for the spring 2021 RISD Department of Furniture Design Graduate Studio asked students to design dual pieces; one to be fabricated in class by the student and a second piece to be chosen for production by DeMuro Das' New Delhi factory. Winning designs from Alexis Tingey, Virginia Gordon and Maxwell Taylor-Milner were selected and the resulting six pieces will be on view alongside a sampling of process work from all nine students.
Under the guidance of RISD Associate Professor Patricia Johnson and Critic Jean Lin of Colony, students were guided through vigorous rounds of research into self-selected topics ranging from the redwood forest and rice paddies to thatching techniques in historical Japanese buildings before design ideation and prototyping. Like in DeMuro Das’ own globally-influenced design process, inspiration played a major role in the development of each student's work.
