Pianos brings together seven unique, high-gloss lacquered pieces that exist somewhere between furniture, sculpture and musical instruments. Their silhouettes evoke the piano, yet none of these objects can be played. Stripped of their original function, they take on a new life as a cabinet, table, bench or wall-mounted piece.
This shift in function also echoes the work of Marcel Duchamp. A familiar object is removed from its usual context and seen in a new light. Yet this is not a traditional readymade. Rather than simply relocating the piano, Muller Van Severen reinvents it both formally and functionally.
