What does it mean to belong in design—and who decides who’s in or out? "OUTSIDE/IN," a new design exhibition presented by Hello Human and Lyle Gallery during NYCxDesign 2025, brings this question to the forefront by showcasing a new generation of designers who are reshaping the industry from their unique vantage points; often existing from outside the establishment.
Featuring works from 12 independent artists and designers, OUTSIDE/IN explores identity, materiality, and self-determination through bold and unconventional design. From sculptural lighting inspired by Vietnamese folk traditions to furniture that doubles as a therapeutic tool for anxiety, each piece in the show reflects design as a vehicle for transformation — culturally, emotionally, and politically.
"At both Lyle Gallery and Hello Human, we’re committed to platforming voices often overlooked by traditional gatekeepers in art and design," said Lin Tyrpien, Founder of Lyle Gallery. "This show is about redefining what excellence looks like in design—rooted in identity, storytelling, and innovation, not just institutional validation."
The exhibition is a collaborative curatorial effort with Hello Human, a community-focused PR company and incubator with a focus on highlighting underrepresented creative talent. "So often, incredible work exists just outside the boundaries of what's been historically considered 'marketable' or 'collectible'," said Jenny Nguyen, Founder of Hello Human. "OUTSIDE/IN is our way of celebrating that space between visibility and erasure—showing that when outsiders come together, they become insiders in their own right."
