Friedman Benda presents SYMBIO, Joris Laarman’s first solo exhibition in New York in more than a decade, bringing together two new bodies of work that reflect his ongoing fusion of advanced technology, sculptural experimentation, and ecological research. The exhibition features pieces from the Ply Loop series - including a chair, console, freestanding bookcase, and wall shelf - which use digital design, hand assembly, and an innovative biodegradable resin to push plywood into new formal and material territory, while pointing toward a renewable future for engineered wood. Also on view is the Symbio series, a group of benches 3D-printed in a concrete-based material designed to permanently store carbon, then embedded with bio-active substrates that support the growth of mosses and lichens in patterns inspired by Alan Turing’s reaction-diffusion model. Together, the works position Laarman’s practice as both technically ambitious and imaginatively hopeful, proposing new relationships between nature and architecture, computation and craft.
