Species

Hostler Burrows is pleased to announce Species, an exhibition by American artist and designer Jake Coan. This is Coan’s first solo presentation and will run from January 4th - February 13, 2024 in the project space of the Los Angeles gallery; an opening reception with the artist will take place on Thursday, January 4th from 5 - 7 pm.

The exhibition features a new series of sculptural lamps created across a variety of media. The works are delicately rendered in brass with stone supports and hand-made paper diffusers; some are cast in bronze or created from dried milkweed branches and rocks collected from the forest near Coan’s home and studio. Fitted with micro LEDs, Coan’s work occupies a liminal space between sculpture and functional object.

Jake Coan (b. 1991) grew up in the Hudson Valley, the son of an architect and potter. He graduated from Bard College with a BA in Studio Art and lives and works in Upstate, NY

About

Hostler Burrows

Hostler Burrows is a design gallery founded in 1998 by Juliet Burrows and Kim Hostler. Initially dedicated solely to Nordic design and decorative arts, the gallery has expanded its program and now integrates a full roster of contemporary artists, both established and emerging, with historical works. While international in scope, the gallery’s primary focus remains in Scandinavia and rooted in the tradition of studio ceramics, particularly work by female artists.
