Material Matters is a platform exploring material intelligence in architecture and design through podcasts, exhibitions, and its annual fair. Following four editions in London, the fair made its Copenhagen debut at 3daysofdesign in 2025, where its material-led focus found a strong audience within the festival.
Returning to 3daysofdesign, Material Matters Copenhagen brings together 19 international exhibitors at Ukraine House. The programme spans wood, glass, textiles, waste, bacteria, concrete, mycelium, rice husks, paper, and more, highlighting designers, makers, manufacturers, and researchers working with materials in thoughtful and inventive ways. With participants from Hong Kong to Slovakia, the UK to Ukraine, the fair offers a broad view of how material research is shaping contemporary design.
The Kast Colour Library is one of the presentations on view at Material Matters:
A curated exploration of colour, texture and sculptural form, The Kast Colour Library at Material Matters marks the British bathroom brand's debut at 3daysofdesign. Celebrated as the first brand to launch a dedicated global collection of concrete bathroom basins, Kast brings its signature 28-shade palette to Copenhagen alongside three new tones, Espresso, Oat, and Olive, the brand's first colour launch in five years, expanding its already exacting spectrum of handcrafted colour.
On display: the award-winning Orme pedestal basin in each new colourway, 28 miniature Tilde basins from the Wave collection each cast in a different signature shade, and a selection of Kast's most sculptural forms, the Art Deco-inspired Iva and Otto basins with their decorative twisted pleats, and the elegantly curved Rho. Together they transform concrete into a vibrant, tactile canvas.
Each piece is handmade in Nottinghamshire from aggregate-based concrete using local Derbyshire limestone, selected sands, and high-quality pigments, achieving the velvety, light-responsive finishes that have made Kast a reference point for architecturally-led bathroom design. The brand has been crafting concrete basins for over 20 years and became part of Kohler Co. in 2023.

About
Material Matters
Material Matters launched as a podcast in 2019 with a simple idea. In each episode design writer and commentator, Grant Gibson, would talk to an artist, maker, designer or architect about their relationship with a particular material or technique and discover how it changed their lives and careers – a bit like a design version of Desert Island Discs. So why materials? Well as writers such as Glenn Adamson and Professor Mark Miodownik have pointed out, if we understand materials, then we understand how the world works. And if we understand how the world works, then we have a better chance of averting the climate emergency the planet is currently hurtling towards.
