For its first hotel in Spain, The Hoxton chose El Poblenou for its creativity and local spirit, and one of its many draws of being in walking distance of the sights and the sea.
El Poblenou is a 30 minute walk or 20 minute train ride from the city’s center. Its changes are notable - new buildings, museums, and tech company headquarters are popping up, and the surrounding area feels very residential.
The district was primarily known as a center for the textile industry during the industrial revolution, and now the mills and factories have been converted into artist studios, restaurants, cafes, and design showrooms.
The Hoxton, Poblenou is a homey feeling hotel with a very social approach. The entry to the hotel brings you to the bar, where you can find other guests working, until around 7 pm when a DJ begins their set adjacent to the lobby and restaurant.
The ground floor also includes Four Corners, a pizza restaurant that is both indoor and outdoor, and serves breakfast until 11:30 the morning. Our favorite was the avocado toast and a cappuccino to start the day, with many other options including a selection of freshly baked homemade pastries from Barcelona’s much loved bakery, Funky Bakers.
The roof stretches the entire length of the hotel offering 360-degree views.
Tope - the hotel’s rooftop - is divided into three portions: a pool with cabanas, a bar and Mexican taqueria embracing seasonality and local produce. A second bar with breathtaking views of the Sagrada Familia cathedral can be found on the opposite end of the pool. The hotel’s lively crowd is both local and international, reflecting the city’s energy and diversity.
The interiors of the The Hoxton, Poblenou were designed in-house by Ennismore, and it is clear that no surface was left untouched. The defining narrative of the space is one rooted in the neighborhood’s textile history, which can be felt throughout the space. Each chair, poof, headboard and rug are colorful - yet subtle - and a perfect example of how texture can elevate an interior space.
The design team approached the complete design as a way to spotlight local artists, and the equally colorful art enhances each room, and never overwhelms.
Embracing the sun and sea of Barcelona, rooms feel Mediterranean with terracotta floors, faded florals, natural jute rugs and serene colour palettes. Handcrafted tapestries hang above statement headboards and floor-to-ceiling windows flood the rooms with light.
The bedrooms are cozy but also spacious and are defined by their woven natural fabrics and soft colors, a perfect blending of a relaxed Mediterranean style and a tailored British sophistication. The terracotta floors and colorful Zellige tiles make each room feel like a spa experience.
