The Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Design Foundation have significantly expanded their commitment to design excellence, allocating 4.7 billion won across seven strategic areas in 2024. This investment represents more than mere financial support—it embodies a holistic vision for nurturing design talent from emergent creators to world-class innovators.
What distinguishes this initiative is its thoughtful progression: young designers collaborate with established companies to develop brands; designers match with manufacturing SMEs to create products; design startups receive scale-up support; finished products gain promotion assistance; sustainable design products and services secure sales channels both domestically and internationally; inclusive companion projects receive development backing; and future-focused collaborations between SMEs and design specialists get targeted support.---
The culmination of these efforts manifests in the DDP Design Launch Fair 2024, which ran from October 17-27. Now in its sixth year, this exhibition has evolved into Seoul's premier design business launching platform, consistently drawing over 100,000 visitors annually and capturing the attention of prestigious international retailers like The Conran Shop (UK), Coming Soon (US), and MoMA (Hong Kong).
"The fair is becoming to Seoul what Paris Design Week is to France or the Milan Design Fair is to Italy," notes one of the fair's five appointed curators, Donghoon Sohn, CEO of Atelier SOHN. These curators play a vital role in selecting exceptional products, mentoring development, and crafting the exhibition spaces—ensuring a cohesive presentation of Korea's design innovation.
What makes the initiative particularly significant is how it weaves together commercial viability with cultural expression. The products emerging from these collaborations don't merely serve functional purposes—they embody narratives about Korean identity, materials, and making traditions while pointing toward future possibilities. A pendant lamp isn't just a light source but a statement about how contemporary Korean designers are reinterpreting traditional forms and materials.
This evolving ecosystem demonstrates how strategic design investment can simultaneously strengthen economic competitiveness, create meaningful employment opportunities for young creators, and establish a distinctive national design language. The DDP Design Launching Fair has become not just a showcase but a catalyst—transforming Dongdaemun into a vibrant design district and positioning Seoul as an emerging global design capital with a unique perspective to offer the world.
