Raimund Girke

Opening on the 21st of January 2023, a new exhibition at Kanaal's Patio Gallery will focus on Girke's work from the second half of the 1980s and 1990s. These years, as the new monograph Raimund Girke. Between White / Das Weiss das Weiss shows, he worked with gestural movements and brushstrokes related to the proportions of the body. At the same time, the many retrospectives also made the artist look back at his own work, and he participated in several important group exhibitions such as the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin in 1985, Musée d'Art Contemporain, Lyon, 1988, and the Venice Biennale in 1990.

"Once begun, a movement need not be stopped again immediately, it can be continued. There's space for it. That's what I find so wonderful about the large works, so liberating, also in terms of the physical well-being one experiences. But sometimes, after doing a number of large formats, I'm quite happy to return to chamber-music, the small format, as it presents other challenges."
