Orbit City

"Orbit City is my speculative vision of a future urban environment, where the boundaries between architecture, environment, society, and the unknown blur.

Continuing my explorations in glass, both as material and metaphor, the forms I create draw from architectural language but resist function. Glass reflects, refracts, conceals, and reveals. It embodies both fragility and resilience, transparency and distortion. I endeavour to explore how light interacts with surface and space, suggesting windows, thresholds, or interfaces. Portals between the past, the present, and the possible.

Riffing on images that lodged in my consciousness while reading Moebius’ The Airtight Garage many years ago, the works in this exhibition draw on the visual language from science fiction, cartoons, and graphic novels.

Within Orbit City, shapes, structures, and patterns emerge – a skyline built from the dreams of our past and hopes for the future. Its buildings hum with ambiguity; they are monuments, machines, homes, and inclusive societies all at once.

I am interested in how we imagine the future – Orbit City invites the viewer to step into a liminal space, a city that hovers between orbit and Earth, fiction and form, anticipation and memory."

About

Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert

Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert was established in 2019 by director Sally Dan-Cuthbert. The first of its kind in Australia, the gallery represents local and international artists and designers, delivering an intergenerational programme of rigorous contemporary art and collectible design. Represented artists and designers regularly exhibit in surveys, biennales, and significant thematic exhibitions in notable institutions globally. Their work is collected into important public and private collections around the world, including The National Gallery of Australia, Australia; Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia; Auckland Art Gallery, NZ; Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, NZ; Los Angeles County Museum, USA; Brooklyn Museum, USA; The British Museum, UK; Kunst von Frauen in der Sammlung Ulla Pietzsch, Germany. The gallery’s internal programme celebrates diverse approaches to media across art and design, with carefully orchestrated intersections of these parallel disciplines. The gallery presents solo exhibitions with emerging, mid-career and established artists and designers alongside curated group exhibitions. The gallery also participates in prestigious fairs and festivals internationally. Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert is located on McLachlan Avenue in Rushcutters Bay, Sydney. The pre-existing building has been refurbished into a light-filled exhibition space with an emphasis on providing accessibility to quality art and design for all.
