“Heavy Hitters” is a group show celebrating Spanish contemporary women sculptors, opening at Tarmak22 (Gstaad Airport) on Friday, July 18th, 2025. It is organized by Antonia Crespí and Travesía Cuatro, in collaboration with Ehrhardt Flórez and Bombon Projects.
The six artists presented in this exhibition—June Crespo, Ángela de la Cruz, Laia Estruch, Eva Fàbregas, Teresa Solar Abboud, and Julia Spínola—belong to a closely linked generation, with the exception of Ángela de la Cruz, a pioneer and a reference for all of them, being a generation older. They are all based in Spain, with the exception of de la Cruz, who has been based in London for de- cades. Her radically expansive approach to painting—blending it with sculpture, installation, and conceptual art—opened the door to a new understanding of matter and materiality.
There is a long tradition in the history of art of reconsidering the materials of everyday life—from Vladimir Tatlin to Marcel Duchamp, Jannis Kounellis, or Robert Rauschenberg. However, this same inquiry, when placed in the hands and universe of women artists, takes on a different meaning. It is not only about the “ordinary” character of the materials, but about the political im- portance of a gesture that looks at materials to see ourselves in them: to see the transformation of our domesticity, to see the way we live with materials produced industrially in a country like Spain—a nation that has undergone a rapid and profound transformation of its traditional ways of living in less than three generations.
