Field Trip

Blu Dot presents Field Trip, an exhibition that celebrates Minneapolis through the lens of one of their most beloved designs, the Field Lounge Chair. Conceived as a love letter to Blu Dot’s hometown, the project captures the chair across more than twenty distinctive locations throughout the Twin Cities, pairing thoughtful design with a strong sense of place.

Photographed by Alec Soth protégé Galen Fletcher in the depths of winter, a season that brings out the true character of the city’s northerners, Field Trip explores a wide-ranging and unexpected cross-section of Minneapolis. From the caves behind Minnehaha Falls to the energy of 1st Avenue, and neighborhood staples like Kathy’s Live Bait to cultural institutions such as the Walker Art Center, the series reflects a city that is creative, diverse, unpretentious, and rich in personality. The result is a portrait of Minneapolis not just as a backdrop, but as an active influence shaping Blu Dot’s approach to design.

The exhibition brings the story to life in a gallery format and showcases prints from the series alongside new finishes of the Field Lounge Chair. Prints will be available for purchase to benefit Little Kitchen Food Shelf, a Minneapolis-based community aid network.

Together, the exhibition, zine, and opening event highlight Blu Dot’s roots while inviting a broader audience to engage with Minneapolis as a vibrant and inspiring creative hub – a place where real design happens.

The opening night will take place on Friday, May 15 (NoMad Night), celebrated with a party from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. If you are interested in attending, please contact bludot@alphakilo.com.

About

Blu Dot

Blu Dot are designers, manufacturers, and distributors of modern furnishings and accessories. Founded in 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the American company was started by three college friends who dreamed of bringing good design to as many people as possible. Almost thirty years later, the business is still led by co-founder and CEO John Christakos, and has expanded to include retail locations across the United States, Mexico, and Australia. Blu Dot's approach to design has always been guided by practicality, accessibility, and a healthy dose of irreverence. While their offering has expanded and diversified to satisfy the needs of both residential and commercial customers across multiple categories, every design the company produces out of their Minneapolis headquarters demonstrates the same level of thoughtfulness, attention to detail, and purpose. For this, they were recognized in 2018 with a National Design Award from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.
